Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Exterior shutters manufactured from plastic. 2. Shop priming exterior shutters. 3. Shop finishing exterior shutters. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Plastic Fabrications: Consist of molded urethane components. 1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product and process indicated and incorporated into exterior shutters during fabrication, finishing, and installation. B. Shop Drawings: Show location of each item, dimensioned plans and elevations, large-scale details, attachment devices, and other components. C. Samples for Verification: 1. Plastic for shop-applied opaque finish, 5 inches wide by 12 inches long for each finish system and color, with one-half of exposed surface finished. 1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS A. Qualification Data: For Installer and fabricator. B. Product Certificates: For each type of product. C. Evaluation Reports: For wood-preservative-treated wood, from ICC-ES. Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom fabricate products similar to those required for this Project and whose products have a record of successful in- service performance. 1. Refer also to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.” 2. For wood products, Shop is a certified participant in AWI's Quality Certification Program. 3. For plastic products: a. Obtain plastic fabrications from a single source. B. Installer Qualifications: 1. Refer also to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.” 1.7 FIELD CONDITIONS A. Weather Limitations: Proceed with installation of exterior shutters only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit work to be performed and at least one coat of specified finish to be applied without exposure to rain, snow, or dampness. B. Field Measurements: Verify dimensions of related construction by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the Work. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 FABRICATORS A. Fabricators: Subject to compliance with requirements provide products by fabricators that meet the criteria of Section 1.5 above. 2.2 EXTERIOR SHUTTERS, GENERAL A. Quality Standard: Unless otherwise indicated, comply with the following standards for construction, finishes, installation, and other requirements: 1. Plastic Shutters: a. Obtain plastic fabrications from a single source. b. Surface-Burning Characteristics: As determined by testing identical products according to ASTM E 84 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1) Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less. c. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Where indicated, provide plastic fabrications identical to those of assemblies tested for fire resistance per ASTM E 119 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings for applicable testing agency. 1) Indicate design designations from UL’s “Fire Resistance Directory” or from the listings of another qualified testing agency. 2) Combustion Characteristics: ASTM E 136. d. Physical Properties: 1) Flexural Strength: ASTM D 790 3329 psi. MATT THE MILLER’S; CARMEL CITY CENTER; SUITE 101 06 49 19 - CARMEL CITY CENTER Issue Date 03.26.12 EXTERIOR SHUTTERS MATT THE MILLER’S; CARMEL CITY CENTER; SUITE 101 2) Flexural Modulus: ASTM D 790 144,219 psi. 3) Tensile Strength: ASTM D 638 2256 psi. 4) Tensile Modulus: ASTM D 638 144,000 psi. 5) Coefficient of Linear Expansion ASTM D 696 3.2 x 10-5/in/deg F 2.3 MATERIALS FOR EXTERIOR PLASTIC SHUTTERS FOR OPAQUE FINISH A. General: Provide materials that comply with manufacturer’s requirements and requirements of applicable ASTM’s. B. Refer to Finish Legend on Drawings for colors. 2.4 WOOD INSTALLATION MATERIALS A. Nails: Hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel. B. Screws: Aluminum or stainless steel. 1. Provide self-drilling screws for metal-framing supports, as recommended by metal- framing manufacturer. C. Anchors: Select material, type, size, and finish required for each substrate for secure anchorage. Provide nonferrous-metal or hot-dip-galvanized anchors and inserts unless otherwise indicated. Provide toothed-steel or lead expansion sleeves for drilled-in-place anchors. 2.5 INSTALLATION MATERIALS FOR PLASTIC A. Fasteners: 1. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners. 2. Plastic fabrication material must be fastened into a flat, solid substrate. B. Adhesives: 1. Glue all plastic fabrication to plastic fabrication joints. 2. Surfaces to be glued shall be smooth, clean, and in complete contact with each other. C. Sealants: 1. Use urethane, polyurethane or acrylic based sealants without silicone. 2.6 SHOP FINISHING FOR PLASTIC A. General: Entire finish of exterior plastic shutters is specified in this Section. To greatest extent possible, finish plastic shutters at fabrication shop. Defer only final touchup and cleaning until after installation. B. Preparations for Finishing: Comply with referenced quality standard for sanding, filling countersunk fasteners, sealing concealed surfaces, and similar preparations for finishing plastic shutters, as applicable to each unit of work. Plastic Shutters for Opaque Finish: Finish plastic shutters to comply with Section 09 91 00 “Painting." PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION A. Before installing plastic shutters, examine shop-fabricated work for completion and complete work as required, including back-priming. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Quality Standard: Install shutters to comply with same grade as item to be installed. B. Install shutters true and straight with no distortions. Shim as required with concealed shims. Install level and plumb to a tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches. C. Scribe and cut shutters to fit adjoining work, and refinish cut surfaces or repair damaged finish at cuts. D. Complete finishing work specified in this Section to extent not completed at shop or before installation of shutters. Fill nail and screw holes with matching filler where exposed. E. Refer to Section 09 91 00 "Painting" for final finishing of installed shutters. 3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Repair damaged and defective shutters, where possible, to eliminate functional and visual defects; replace shutters where not possible to repair. Adjust joinery for uniform appearance. B. Clean shutters on exposed and semi-exposed surfaces. Touch up shop-applied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas. END OF SECTION 06 49 19
