SECTION 09 54 28 - WOOD SLAT CEILING

PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section includes linear wood slat ceiling system.
1.3 PRE-INSTALLATION MEETINGS
A. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.
1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: For each type of product.
1. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components
and profiles, and finishes for linear wood slat ceiling system.
B. Shop Drawings:
1. Include plans, elevations, sections, and attachment details.
2. Detail fabrication and assembly of linear wood slat ceiling system.
C. Samples: For each exposed product and for each color and texture specified, 9 inches by 12
inches wood sample.
1. Sample shall be of wood specie selected, with selected finish applied.
D. Product Schedule: Refer to Finish Legend on Drawings.
1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Coordination Drawings: Drawn to scale, on which the following items are shown and
coordinated with each other, using input from installers of the items involved:
B. Qualification Data: For Installer and manufacturer.
C. Material Certificates: For each type of wood slat.

D. Sample Warranty: For manufacturer's warranty.
1.6 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS
A. Furnish extra materials, from the same product run, that match products installed and that are
packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.
1. Linear wood slats: Equal to 2 percent of quantity installed for each size indicated.
1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications:
1. Refer to Specification Section 01 40 00 “Quality Requirements.”
B. Installer Qualifications: An entity that employs installers and supervisors who are trained and
approved by manufacturer or an authorized representative who is trained and approved by
manufacturer.

C. Mockups: Build mockups, if requested in writing by Architect, to verify selections made under
Sample submittals to set quality standards for fabrication and installation.
1. Build mockup of typical linear wood slat ceiling system as shown on Drawings.
2. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract
Documents contained in mockups unless Architect specifically approves such deviations
in writing.
3. Subject to compliance with requirements, approved mockups may become part of the
completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.
1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. All materials shall be delivered to the project site in original, labeled, unopened packages.
B. Materials shall be stored flat and level in a fully enclosed space. For a minimum of 72 hours
immediately prior to installation, the wood strips shall be stored in the room in which they will be
installed. The temperature and humidity of the room shall closely approximate those conditions
that will exist when the building is occupied. Linear wood slats shall be store off the floor.
C. Care in handling must be exercised to avoid damage.
1.9 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Installation shall be done only when the temperature and humidity closely approximate the
interior conditions that will exist when the building is occupied. The heating and cooling systems
shall be operating before, during, and after installation, with the humidity of the interior spaces
maintained between 25 % and 55%.
B. Prior to installation, all exterior windows and doors are to be in place, glazed and weather-
stripped. The roof is to be watertight, and all wet trades’ work is to be completed.

1.10 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer's Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace products or materials that
fail(s) in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
1. Warranty Period: One year(s) from date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A. Thermal Movements: Allow for thermal movements from ambient and surface temperature
changes.
1. Temperature Change: 120 deg F, ambient; 180 deg F, material surfaces.
B. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTM E 84; testing by a qualified testing agency.
Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less.
2. Smoke-Developed Index: 450 or less.
C. Fire-Resistance Ratings: Comply with ASTM E 119; testing by a qualified testing agency.
Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.
1. Indicate design designations from UL's "Fire Resistance Directory" or from the listings of
another qualified testing agency.
2. Combustion Characteristics: ASTM E 136.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Wood Slats:
1. Species: Poplar.
2. Size: 1 inch x 4 inches.
B. Finishes:
1. Finish with wood stain.
2. Refer to Finish Legend on Drawings.
2.3 FABRICATION
A. Refer to plans and details on Drawings.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates areas and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with
requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.

B. Examine linear wood slat system before installation. Reject materials that are wet, moisture
damaged, or mold damaged.
C. Examine walls and ceiling for suitable conditions where linear wood slat system will be installed.
D. Prepare written report, endorsed by Installer, listing conditions detrimental to performance.
E. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Ceiling Layout: The contractor shall measure ceiling areas and establish the layout, in
accordance with installation instructions.
B. Coordination: Coordinate work with other disciplines as required.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Contractor shall install materials in accordance with construction documents.
3.4 PROTECTION
A. Remove and replace materials that are wet, moisture damaged, or mold damaged.
