A. Boxes to be UL listed for application, and so labeled.

A. Deliver, Store and handle materials in accordance with Section 260500.

2.02 MATERIALS
A. All boxes shall be sized in accordance with the National Electrical Code and
Underwriter’s Laboratories approved.
B. Boxes shall be single�gang or multi�gang as indicated in the Contract Documents.
C. Do not use sectional or handy boxes unless specifically requested.
D. Outlet Boxes and Accessories for Interior Installation:
1. Pressed sheet galvanized steel with knockouts for conduit unless otherwise
indicated.
2. Provide device outlet boxes with raised combination device and tile covers
(plaster rings, tile rings, etc.) where installed in drywall and plaster finishes.
Covers shall be square drawn ring or square cut tile ring. Depth of rings shall be
such that ring is flush with finished surfaces.
3. Provide barriers in switch boxes for multi�gang switches where required by
applicable codes and by Section 16140.
4. Flush Mounted:
a. Ceilings:
1) Typical Electrical Devices: 4” or 4�11/16” square outlet boxes
with a minimum depth of box without plaster ring shall be
2�1/8 inches unless otherwise indicated.
2) Communications Systems Outlets: Minimum depth of boxes
without plaster ring shall be 3 inches deep (1�1/2 inch deep box
with 1�1/2 inch deep extension ring) unless otherwise indicated
b. Walls:
1) Drywall and Plaster:
a) Typical Electrical Devices: 4” or 4�11/16” square outlet boxes with a
minimum depth of box without plaster ring shall be 2�1/8 inches
unless otherwise indicated.
b) Communications Systems Outlets: 4” or 4�11/16” square outlet boxes
with a minimum depth of boxes without plaster ring shall be 3 inches
deep (1�1/2 inch deep box with 1�1/2 inch deep extension ring) unless
otherwise indicated.
c) Provide boxes with matching plaster ring for single�gang or two�gang
outlets unless otherwise indicated.
d) Provide larger or special outlet boxes as required.
2) Masonry Walls::
a) Typical Electrical Devices: Boxes with a minimum depth of
2�1/2 inches unless otherwise indicated.
b) Communications Systems Outlets: Boxes with a minimum depth of
3�1/2 inches unless otherwise indicated.

c) Provide larger or special outlet boxes as required.
c. Poured Concrete:
1) Typical Electrical Devices: Boxes rated for used in concrete and
a minimum depth of 3�1/2 inches unless otherwise indicated.
2) Communications Systems Outlets: Boxes rated for used in
concrete and a minimum depth of 3�1/2 inches unless otherwise
indicated.
3) Provide larger or special outlet boxes as required.
5. Surface Mounted in Unfinished Spaces:
a. Outlet boxes and accessories shall be the same as those specified for
flush mounted.
b. Where outlet boxes are surface mounted and contain light switches
and/or receptacle wiring devices, 4” and/or 4�11/16” square box covers
with wiring device openings may be used.
6. Surface Mounted in Finished Spaces:
a. Boxes shall be surface mount type design for use with surface raceway.
b. Ceilings: Round outlet boxes with a minimum depth of 1 inch unless
otherwise indicated.
c. Walls:
1) Typical Electrical Devices: Boxes shall have a minimum depth
of 1�1/2 inches unless otherwise indicated or deeper box is
required for installed device.
2) Communications Systems Outlets: Boxes shall have a minimum
depth of 2�3/4 inches unless otherwise indicated.
d. See Specification Section 26 05 33, Surface Raceways, for additional
requirements.
e. Fire Alarm System:
1) Where electromagnetic door hold�open devices are to be
mounted separately from the doors and are installed in surface
mounted outlet boxes, the outlet boxes shall be die cast
aluminum outdoor type boxes.
2) See Section 28 31 02, Addressable Fire Alarm System, for
additional requirements regarding surface mounted devices.
7. Special Communications Systems Outlet Box for Audio/Video Local Origination
Input:
a. Special four�gang outlet box with mounting bracket and trim. Minimum
depth of box shall be 3.25 inches with conduit knocks for up to 1 1/2

inch trade size. Provide box with gray ivory white colored device
mounting bracket and trim ring.
b. Box: Legrand/Wiremold #WSA42�4.
c. Mounting Bracket and Trim Ring: Open architecture device mounting
bracket proving mounting for one standard single�gang wall plate and
one standard two�gang wall plate. Trim ring to hide the hole cut and
provide finished appearance. Bracket and trim ring shall be
Legrand/Wiremold #WSA00�4G (gray color). #WSA00�4I (ivory color).
#WSA00�4WH (white color).
E. Outlet Boxes for Exterior, Wet and Damp Location Installation:
1. Vapor and Watertight: Cast ferrous type, zinc electroplates with epoxy spray
finish coat for all vapor tight and watertight fixtures in tunnels, exterior lights,
vaults, etc.
2. Exterior Sound System Paging Horn Outlet Boxes: 3�1/2 inches deep, 4 inches
square, gasketed box, unless otherwise indicated.
F. Provide other types of outlet boxes as indicated or required for installation conditions.
G. Boxes and Fittings For Explosion Proof areas:
1. Manufacturers: Subjects compliance with requirements, provide product by one
of the following:
a. Appleton Electric:
b. Akron Electric Inc.
c. Crouse�Hinds.
2.03 FABRICATION
A. Exterior, Wet, and Damp Location Boxes: 16 gage galvanized steel box and cover with
drip shield, neoprene gasket and stainless steel cover screws. NEMA 250 Type 3R and
Type 4.
B. Outlet Boxes: All boxes shall be galvanized steel of not less than #14 U.S. gauge unless
otherwise indicated.
C. Pull Boxes and Junction Boxes::
1. Metal construction, conforming to NFPA 70 and UL 50 standards.
2. Screwed, bolted or hinged cover are required or indicated.

3. Flush Mounted: Provide overlapping covers with flush�head cover retaining
screws, prime coated.
2.04 FINISHES
A. Outlet Boxes: Hot dip galvanized, 1.25 ounces per square foot, or cadmium plated, and
conforming to UL requirements.
PART 3 � EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATIONS
A. For boxes mounted in insulated walls, both interior and exterior, ensure there is insulation
behind outlet boxes.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Installation shall be in accordance with NECA practices.
B. Outlet Boxes:
1. Provide outlet boxes for all lighting fixtures, wiring devices, signal devices,
telephone/voice outlets, data outlets, television/video outlets, etc.
2. Provide metallic and non�metallic raceways as specifically indicated on the
Contract Documents.
C. Mounting:
1. Flush:
a. Install all outlet boxes flush mounted unless otherwise indicated:
b. In accordance with Article 314.20 of the National Electrical Code::
c. In walls or ceilings with a surface of concrete, tile, gypsum, plaster, or
other noncombustible material, boxes shall be installed so that the front
edge of the box will not be set back of the finished surface more than 6
mm (1/4 inch).
d. In walls and ceilings constructed of wood or other combustible surface
material, boxes shall be flush with the finished surface or project there
from.
e. Where wall areas include applied wall finishes, adjust the mounting
position of outlet boxes or provide deeper plaster/tile rings to allow for
the added thickness of the finished wall. Applied wall finishes include,
but are not limited to, laminate and metal wall panel systems,

backsplashes, tackable surfaces, and counter/work surface backsplashes
(such as in work rooms, science rooms, etc.).
f. Use of “goof rings”, such as Raco “Add�A�Depth” rings, and other
similar devices is not permitted.
2. Surface and Exposed: Outlet boxes are to be installed surface mounted or
exposed as follows:
a. Install boxes surface mounted in areas above accessible ceilings.
b. Install boxes exposed where located above 10 feet in rooms with exposed
ceiling construction.
c. Outlet boxes may be installed exposed in unfinished mechanical rooms,
unfinished dedicated electrical rooms, and boiler rooms. A space shall
be considered unfinished where there are no finished ceilings, walls, or
floors.
d. Outlet boxes may be installed exposed in other spaces specifically
designated by the Architect.
3. Existing Construction: In existing finished areas where a outlet boxes cannot be
installed flush due to wall construction, surface mount style outlet boxes may be
used after obtaining permission of Architect to do so. Surface box shall be ivory
colored metalplastic type as manufactured by Hubbell, Panduit, or Wiremold. as
specified in Section 26 05 33.
4. Install flush mounted outlet boxes and raised device covers so that device plates
fit tightly against finished surfaces..
5. Mount outlet boxes plumb and square with the building.
6. Where flush wall mounted outlet boxes are located back�to�back, install the
boxes staggered at least 12 inches apart to minimize sound transmission, unless
otherwise indicated.
7. Do not install outlet boxes in “through wall” manner.
8. Do not install outlet boxes “back�to�back” or within 12 inches center�to�center,
penetrating opposite sides of wall construction, and installed in a fire resistive
and/or fire rated walls.
9. Do not install outlet boxes where prohibited by fire codes or other applicable
codes.
10. Provide blank cover plates for all outlet boxes that do not contain wiring devices
or other types of connectors.
11. Close all unused conduit openings with knockout closures.

D. Pull Boxes and Junction Boxes::
1. Provide pull boxes and junction boxes in accordance with the National Electrical
code and as indicated in other Sections of this specification, and on the
Drawings.
2. Locate pull boxes and junction boxes above removable ceilings or in electrical,
mechanical, storage rooms, etc., wherever possible. Coordinate location of pull
boxes and junction boxes with other trades.
3. When junction boxes are located above inaccessible ceilings, locate the box
approximately twelve inches from a recessed fluorescent light fixture to allow
access to junction boxes by removal of the fixture.
4. Close all unused conduit openings with knockout closures.
5. Provide junction and pull boxes with covers.
6. Install all box covers with tamperproof screws.
7. Labeling: Provide circuit identification labeling as specified in Section 26 05 53.
8. Support::
a. Boxes shall be rigidly supported from the building structure and securely
fastened in place. The supporting means shall provide vertical support of
the weight of the equipment and prevent horizontal movement or sway.
b. Boxes shall be rigidly supported from the building structure and securely

c. Do not attach boxes to ceiling support wires.
d. Remove wire used for temporary supports.
e. Arrange supports to prevent misalignment during wiring installation.
f. Fasten box supports to building structure and surfaces under provisions
of Section 26 05 29.
g. See Section 26 05 29 for additional requirements.
3.03 CONSTRUCTION
A. Coordinate installation of boxes in block, brick and masonry walls with Contractor
responsible for erecting wall.
B. Adjust position of outlets in finished masonry walls to suit masonry course lines. Locate
boxes in the top of masonry units centered in unit cells. Coordinate cutting of masonry

walls to achieve neat openings for boxes. Use rotary cutting equipment to cut masonry
work for installation of electrical fittings.
C. For all outlet boxes, including switches and receptacles mounted above counters, benches
and in backsplashes, coordinate location and mounting heights of the boxes with built�in
casework and equipment.
D. Adjust outlet box mounting height to agree with required location for equipment to be
served.
