PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION
A. In areas where new recessed and surface mounted lighting fixtures are replacing existing
lighting fixtures installed in or on plaster or gypsum board ceilings, the Contractor is
responsible for cutting and contracting with the approved trades to patch, repair, and paint
ceilings as required to accommodate the new installations.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Lighting fixtures: Set level, plumb, and square with ceilings and walls. Install lamps in
each fixture.
B. Support for Lighting Fixtures in or on GridType Suspended Ceilings: Use grid as a
support element.

1. Install a minimum of two at diagonal corners (or four if shown by detail on the
Contract Drawings) ceiling support system rods or wires for each fixture. Locate
not more than 6 inches from lighting fixture corners.
2. Fixtures of Sizes Less Than Ceiling Grid: Install as indicated on reflected ceiling
plans or center in acoustical panel, and support fixtures independently with at least
two 3/4inch metal channels spanning and secured to ceiling tees.
C. Suspended Lighting Fixture Support:
1. Pendants and Rods: Where longer than 48 inches brace to limit swinging.
2. StemMounted, SingleUnit Fixtures: Suspend with twinstem hangers.
3. Continuous Rows: Use tubing or stem for wiring at one point and tubing or rod for
suspension for each unit length of fixture chassis, including one at each end.
D. Adjust aimable lighting fixtures to provide required light intensities.
E. Connect wiring according to Division 26 Section "LowVoltage Electrical Power
Conductors and Cables."
F. Lighting Fixtures:
1. Alzak Finishes: Handle Alzak reflectors and parabolic louvers with clean gloves to
avoid finger marks.
2. Lighting fixtures are indicated in their approximate locations and may be relocated
as requested by the Architect without additional charge to the Owner.
3. Install recessed fixtures to permit removal from below, so as to gain access to
outlet or prewired fixture box. Where fluorescent and incandescent fixtures are in
the same area, mount the box near the fluorescent fixture opening.
4. Wiring Connections:
a. Recessed Fixtures: Connect each fixture separately to associated junction
box with flexible conduit and fixture wire. Wiring lighting fixtures in a
“daisychain” manner (looping from lighting fixture to lighting fixture) is
not permitted.
b. Pendant Mounted Fixtures:
c. 1) Unless specified indicated otherwise, connect fixtures with flexible
conduit and fixture wire.
d. 2) Flexible conduit or cord shall be the minimum length required to
connect the fixtures, and shall be routed straight, plumb, and neatly tied or
otherwise attached to the fixtures and fixture support hardware. Excess
lengths, loops or sags in flexible conduit and cords is not acceptable.

5. Install all fixtures plumb and level.
6. Support of Fixtures:
a. Recessed LayIn (Grid) Lighting Fixtures:
1) Fixtures shall be supported by the ceiling framing members and
securely fasten fixtures to framing members utilizing earthquake
clips.
2) Safety Cables and Safety Chains:
a) At all recessed layin fixtures provide safety cables or safety
chains attached to each corner of fixtures and attached to
building structural members above.
b) Attach or loop safety cables or safety chains utilizing approved
clamps or by wrapping around structure. In the case of safety
cables, all methods utilized shall be approved by the safety
cable manufacturer.
c) The safety cables or safety chains shall be installed nearly
vertical in orientation or slightly splayed apart so that if the
ceiling were to drop or collapse, the fixtures would swing or
move no more than six inches. Provide structural channel or
steel support above the ceiling as necessary to meet this
requirement.
d) Install safety cables such that they are approximately 1/2 inch
short of being taut.
e) Install safety chains such that they are one chain link short of
being taut.
f) One safety cable or safety chain may serve two adjacent
corners of a fixture by attachment to one fixture corner, loop
around structure, and attachment to adjacent fixture corner.
g)
b. All Other Lighting Fixtures:
1) Suspend or support independently of the ceiling construction all
recessed fixtures which are not the layin (grid) type and all
surface type fixtures, in or on the ceiling, from the structural
members above.
2) Where steel channel supports systems are utilized to support the
ceiling construction, support the fixtures from the top members of
the system rather than from the structural members above them.
3) Mount pendant mounted fixtures on structural channel supported
from structural members above them.
4) Mount exit signs and emergency lighting units on standard 4 inch
outlet boxes.
5) Support lighting track every 2 feet from structure above.
6)
7. Painting: Unless factory finished, paint all exposed flexible conduit and fixture
support hardware in finished and semifinished areas of the building. This includes
rooms without ceilings but with painted roof or steel structure.

G. Lamps: Install lamps in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and prior to final
punch inspection.
H. Ballasts:
1. Provide ballasts of compatible design to lamps specified.
I. Internally Lighted Signs:
1. Lamps for AC Operation: LEDs, 70,000 hours minimum rated lamp life.
2. SelfPowered Exit Signs (Battery Type): Integral automatic charger in a self
contained power pack.
a. Battery: Sealed, maintenancefree, nickelcadmium type.
b. Charger: Fully automatic, solidstate type with sealed transfer relay.
c. Operation: Relay automatically energizes lamp from battery when circuit
voltage drops to 80 percent of nominal voltage or below. When normal
voltage is restored, relay disconnects lamps from battery, and battery is
automatically recharged and floated on charger.
d. Test Push Button: Pushtotest type, in unit housing, simulates loss of
normal power and demonstrates unit operability.
e. LED Indicator Light: Indicates normal power on. Normal glow indicates
trickle charge; bright glow indicates charging at end of discharge cycle.
f. Remote Test: Switch in handheld remote device aimed in direction of
tested unit initiates coded infrared signal. Signal reception by factory
installed infrared receiver in tested unit triggers simulation of loss of its
normal power supply, providing visual confirmation of either proper or
failed emergency response.
g. Integral SelfDiagnostics: Factoryinstalled electronic device
automatically initiates coderequired test of unit emergency operation at
required intervals. Test failure is annunciated by an integral audible alarm
and flashing red LED.
J. Connect wiring according to Division 26 Section "LowVoltage Electrical Power Conductors and
Cables."
3.03 REINSTALLATION
A. Contractor shall carefully remove and store the existing lighting fixtures noted to be
relocated.
B. Contractor shall install the relocated lighting fixtures in the locations indicated and connect
them to the circuits and controls indicated on the drawings.
C. Contractor shall inspect and provide all necessary labor and material to ensure that each of
the existing fixtures to be relocated is in first class working condition.

A. Test for Emergency Lighting: Interrupt power supply to demonstrate proper operation.
Verify transfer from normal power to battery and retransfer to normal.
B. Prepare a written report of tests, inspections, observations, and verifications indicating and
interpreting results. If adjustments are made to lighting system, retest to demonstrate
compliance with standards.
