Carmel Clay Schools - Continuing Excellence in
Education
January 31,2005
Dear Carmel High School Neighbor:
Late in 2003 and early in 2004, a committee met at Carmel High School to draft a
recommendation to designate areas of Carmel High School in memory of former
principal, Dr. William H. Duke. A final proposal was made to the Carmel School Board
in the spring of 2004. The following is the text of the recommendations of the Dr.
William H Duke Memorial Committee as adopted:
I!.
III.
IV.
The name to be given to the designated areas will be "Dr. William H. Duke
Center for the Performing Arts".
Because of Dr. Duke's love for the performing arts and his personal and family
interest in music, the committee chose the performing arts areas of Carmel High
School to honor Dr. Duke's memory.
Specific areas to be named in honor of Dr. Duke'
a. The existing performing arts wing of Carmel High School which includes
current band and orchestra rooms, piano lab, choral and drama rooms and
the performing arts department office.
b. The future freshman performing arts wing (now under construction on the
east side adjacent to the east drive).
Signage for the above mentioned areas will include:
a. Letters reading "Dr. William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts" should
be placed either on the glass above entrance #29 or on the concrete slab
siding immediately above entrance #29 (size of letters consistent with other
building lettering).
b. Immediately inside entrance #29, on the south (curved) wall, a plaque will be
mounted which reads, "Dr. William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts."
Also on the plaque, a brief resume should follow honoring Dr. Duke's.
commitment and dedication to education at Carmel High School and his
years as principal.
c. On the brick of the newly constructed freshman performing arts area
on the east side of the building (facing the east drive), letters
consistent with other exterior building lettering (i.e., Eric Clark Activity
Center) should read, "Dr. William H. Duke Center for the Performing
Arts".
d. In the interior of the Auditorium Commons and on the wood partitions above
the south entrance to the performing arts wing, lettering should read "Dr.
William H. Duke Center for the Performing Arts". Also, if possible a portrait of
Dr. Duke should be placed immediately below the lettering.
