Do I need to "reply to all". I generally will not do that unless it is necessary or I'm asked. We are "replacing the existing" tree grates so basically swapping one for the other. Most of these already butt up to the curb so there is not room to make them larger without distorting the original square design and we would have an inconsistent look throughout the mall with some square and some rectangular. Also by changing the scope of work it will greatly increase the costs that would delay the project and put the project well over budget which in turn would likely not get Corporate approval. I appreciate your support of the project as I've hated the tree wells with grates since I started managing the mall 5 years ago. These planters not only solve a problem for us but they also, as you said add seating which I like, as well as just the softening, texture and dimension it brings. I'd appreciate your approval as submitted for this added value and problem solving project. Thank you. Let me know if you have any further questions. This is exactly what I have been trying to promote for all developments in Carmel since I took over plan review a couple years ago. I am glad this was decided, and please feel free to ask me any questions about landscaping, if changes to design is needed. I do however, have one comment/request. My normal minimum ideal planter bed is 6'*6' . As it seems the one dimension will need to be 5' I would request that the other dimension be 7' not 5' . This should provide enough root volume for the tree for a more mature size. As this is a smaller 30' maximum height size tree a 5*7 should be sufficient. I would recommend a 5*10 on any large size tree if this design is to be replicated. The goal is for longevity and size and the bigger the beds the better. The other reason I think these above ground beds are great is because annuals can easily be installed in the bed and that it may provide more seating. Also, the drip irrigation should be adequate, I am glad that this is incorporated. We are replacing the 23 existing trees with the same type and in the newly built planters. I'm done "throwing good money after bad" This is actually the 3rd replant since the mall was built. The salt just destroys them. This should be the final time as we are solving the root problem (literally! ! ! ). No problem. Rachel Boone will be contacting you about this and you getting administrative approvals. We will also probably have you run this by the City Forester, Daren Mindham, too, after you officially file the application. -Angie Conn, Planning Administrator Original Message From: BSchick@simon.com [mailto:BSchick@simon.com] Sent: Friday, March 30, 2012 1:43 PM To: Conn, Angelina V Subject: Fw: Masonry Planters Angie - Please see below what I sent to Mike. I don't know why I didn't think about this before but I didn't. After I sent Mike the below I thought I should send to you just in case you'd get it first and I would have to go thru a process. I'd appreciate your comments. I showed what we wanted to do last year to Mike and he liked it, I just never ran the traps on whether I needed to obtain anything from the City. . .Of course I'm ready to award the contract and get going. . . Thanks. . .let me know. I am needing to replace the trees again in the grates along the Blvd due to the immense amount of salt that is being absorbed into the soil that is resulting in a quick decline in the health of the trees. After two complete replacements in 7 years we are building masonry planters around the new trees. .need to get to the root of the problem. I wasn't sure if I needed to obtain City approval for this or not. See the attached as what they will look like. I've received all the bids and ready to award the bid and submit for my corporate approval so I can get going, its going to be a lengthy process. If you could let me know I'd appreciate it. . .Thanks PS. . .the image below is just for presentation purposes-the planter does not invade the parking area. I will be taking necessary precautions as well to ensure vehicles will not bump into the planters - if you need the scope of work, specs etc I can provide those too.
