November 13`h Afternoon Mobile Workshops Approximately 1-S PM Walk/Bike Tour of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail The Indianapolis Cultural Trail:A Legacy of Gene & Marilyn Glick is a world-class urban bike and pedestrian path that connects neighborhoods, Cultural Districts and entertainment amenities, and serves as the downtown hub for the entire Central Indiana greenway system. It resulted from the vision and commitment of dedicated public and private partners. Attendees of this workshop will explore the trail; learn its development and funding history; hear about design, construction and maintenance processes and challenges;and visit businesses that benefit from trail users. Workshop Partners: Marion County Public Health Department, Indianapolis Cultural Trail West Indianapolis Walkability Survey Have you ever wondered where to even start in making your community more walkable? A walkability survey is a great way to get people involved, empower residents and start building momentum for your efforts.This workshop will offer a hands-on experience in conducting a walkability survey; attendees will rate an area's walkability, identify concerns and provide recommendations to improve their neighborhood's pedestrian environment. This workshop will also provide information and resources for organizing such a survey in your community and then preparing the comprehensive assessment of recommended actions for community improvements. Workshop Partners:HARP, Indiana State Department of Health, West Indianapolis Community Development Corporation, Miller Transportation Speedway,the Super Bowl Legacy,and Community Economic Development Workshop attendees will visit Speedway for a Study in Complete Streets and Walkability and Indianapolis' Near Eastside to learn about Revitalization through Partnerships. Community leaders and the organizations they represent are essential to successful redevelopment efforts. While touring the infrastructure and public spaces of these two communities, attendees will hear from local leaders about vision becoming reality,the successes and challenges they've faced, and the critical role of partner organizations and the public. Learning objectives Attendees will be able to name three public health impacts of the built environment Attendees will understand the severity, complexity and urgency of the obesity/chronic disease burden Attendees will know how to engage in two built environment related advocacy efforts Dr.Susan Polan is Associate Executive Director for Public Affairs and Advocacy with the American Public Health Association. Prior to joining APHA,Susan worked as the Director of Government Relations at the Trust for America's Health, a public advocacy organization.There she served as a lead staff lobbyist to Congress,federal agencies and the administration on priority issues including public health infrastructure development and chronic disease prevention. She has more than a decade of experience in public health,government relations and associations. Transportation Equity: Creating Economic Opportunity and Health for All Anita Hairston, PolicyLink This session will: • Describe how transportation infrastructure investments contribute to health disparities and social and environmental injustice; • Recommend policy approaches that ensure investments in infrastructure create economic opportunity and health in all communities; • Propose methods and tools that will lead to the successful engagement and inclusion of underserved communities in project and policy development and implementation. Learning objectives Attendees will understand the connections between transportation and equity Attendees will be able to name two policy approaches that work to reduce disparities Attendees will learn two ways for better engaging underserved communities Anita Hairston, a Senior Associate at PolicyLink, is based in Washington DC and works on transportation policy. She advances PolicyLink priorities that relate to promoting equitable and fair infrastructure investments,with a particular focus on surface transportation. Prior to joining PolicyLink,Anita spent six years with the Washington, DC Office of Planning,where she served-first as a Community Planner, working on neighborhood and citywide plans and ultimately as the Chief of Staff, providing leadership to the agency's media activities, legislative initiatives,and several of its major projects. She has also worked as a planning consultant on several projects, including a regional smart growth plan for the San Francisco Bay Area. Anita holds a Masters Degree in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. Walk This Way:Campaigns to Improve Neighborhood Walkability Tom Samuels This session will: • Detail effective policies and programs that lead to improved walkability and increased walking for people of all ages; • Suggest strategies for effective neighborhood level engagement in walkability campaigns • Offer insight on policy development and advocacy from an administrative/political perspective Learning objectives Attendees will learn of three walkability/walking approaches they can use in their own community Attendees will be able to describe the value of public involvement in neighborhood walkability issues Attendees will understand two techniques for successfully advocating with local governments Tom Samuels is from Toronto, Canada. He was recruited by former Mayor Daley to help reshape Chicago's transportation and urban design infrastructure. He has contributed to the development and implementation of numerous community-based initiatives such as Safe Routes to Schools/Walking School Bus Programs,,which create safe and enjoyable opportunities for children to walk and bicycle to and from school.Tom has a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's in landscape architecture. His thesis became the City of Toronto's Traffic Calming policy,which continues to serve as the model policy for other municipalities throughout North America. Tom lives in Chicago with his wife and two sons. Retrofitting Suburbia: Making Sprawl Sustainable Ellen Dunham-Jones, Georgia Tech This session will: • Provide an overview of the changing conditions and trends leading to the declining desirability of suburban design patterns; • Offer examples of a variety of retrofit projects, including considerations,strategies, methods and outcomes; • Suggest policy and planning approaches that facilitate successful redevelopment. Learning objectives Attendees will understand the conditions and trends leading to the need to retrofit suburbia Attendees will be able to name three examples of retrofit project ideas Attendees will learn two policy approaches that can be used in redevelopment projects Ellen Dunham-Jones is an award-winning architect and professor of urban design at the Georgia Institute of Technology. An authority on sustainable suburban redevelopment,she is co-author with June Williamson of Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs, (Wiley, 2009, updated paperback edition in 2011.) Its documentation of successful retrofits of aging big box stores, malls, and office parks into more sustainable places received a PROSE award and has been featured in The New York Times,Time Magazine, Harvard Business Review, PBS, NPR,TED and other prominent venues. She serves as Chair of the board of the Congress for the New Urbanism, lectures widely, and conducts workshops and research on the many co-benefits of retrofitting. Organizing People and Projects to Maximize Impact Eric Friedman, Housing and Community Solutions This session will: • Offer a model for organizing and collaboration that is inclusive,strategic and outcome-oriented • Detail policy and fiscal/investment approaches to affordable, sustainable development • Highlight two case studies from St. Louis with examples of healthy,vibrant development resulting from targeted investments Learning objectives Attendees will learn two strategies for effectively organizing partners and advocates Attendees will be able to describe multiple characteristics of a model project Attendees will understand how fiscal policy can support or hinder revitalization projects Eric Friedman brings over 40 years of experience in community, economic development and real estate. As President and founder of Friedman Group, Ltd., Eric has provided commercial/industrial and workforce housing real.estate services to businesses, not for profits,government and investors. Eric has founded,supported and facilitated numerous groups to benefit St. Louis including founding and co- chairing the St. Louis Transit Alliance, a coalition of organizations working to improve and promote public transportation. Eric serves as President and Head Coach of Housing and Community Solutions, Inc. a not for profit involved in community and economic development and affordable housing. He founded and organized Walk Live St. Louis 2012 an event to help give community leaders and members the skills to create walkable, bikeable and safe communities.
