Registration fee includes:
Breakfast rolls,fruit,coffee and juice in the mornings,snacks and soft drinks all week, along with Friday
lunch are provided. Other lunches and dinners are not included.Excellent handout material is provided.
Certificates of completion are awarded at the end of the seminar.
Attire:
Casual clothes - maybe ones that could get a little dirty. You'll be in the lab analyzing burned appliances.
They'll be dirty and you might get that way,too.Turnout gear is not needed.
Materials:
Supplies are provided. You might want to bring a camera,because we have some interesting exhibits you
might like to photograph.We don't permit videotaping of the seminar,however.
Seminar content:
The school is intended to provide in-depth material about a range of fire causes related to large (and some
small) appliances.
• We will discuss natural and LP-gas distribution systems and then go into the proper functioning of
gas water heaters,furnaces and clothes dryers.The failure modes of these appliances will be
discussed and many illustrated. Numerous demonstrations will be presented and actual failed
appliances will be present for hands-on examination.
• We will also cover how various electric appliances—dishwashers,ranges, microwave ovens,
refrigerators and small appliances—function and explore their failure modes. Learn what to look for
in the aftermath of a fire.
• NOTE: We have refocused the appliance fires class to concentrate only on appliances, how they
work and fail. For discussions about high resistance connections,floating neutrals,causes of
electrical failures,etc., inquire about our two-day session,"Residential Electricity for Fire
Investigators."
Testing and continuing education:
Testing is an integral part of the program,though it's not required. You will have the opportunity to
examine products,components,case studies and X-rays to test yourself in determining the cause of a fire.
This is very much the hands-on part of the class. You also have an option to take a separate written test that
will count toward your CFI certification. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for a
nominal fee. See us at the seminar for details.
Do I have to be an engineer to understand this?
Absolutely not! The material will be presented in everyday language.We hope you will know more about
many of these products after the seminar than many engineers investigating fires today; however,the
school is not intended for beginning investigators and might not be suitable for someone at that level.
Origin determination:
This is a seminar about appliance failures and we will spend very little time discussing the origin of fires.
If you are interested in an in-depth review of origin determinations (or any other topic related to fire
investigation),please call us at 269-925-2200 about specialized seminars geared around your
group's needs.
Cancellations:
If you cannot attend, you may send a substitute,but please inform our office in writing of any change before
the seminar. (Address info is on the front of this sheet.)
If you cancel up to 30 days before the start of your selected session,your registration fee will be refunded
less a $50 enrollment charge. If you cancel 10 to 29 days before the start of your selected session,the
registration fee is 50 percent refundable. If you cancel 9 days or less before the start of your session,we
must assess the total seminar fee.
These terms are necessary because sessions are limited to 48 people and we're always forced to turn away
other students who want to attend. Since attendees often come from long distances,it's generally impossible
to fill vacant seats with short notice.
Partial attendance:
Sorry,no refunds will be given for participants attending only one day of the session.

When you leave the South Bend Airport, turn right onto US 20. As you leave the Kalamazoo Airport, turn right onto Portage
This will take you to US 31 North, where you take the exit for Road. Then, turn right at the first traffic light past the I-94
Niles, Michigan. You're about 35 minutes from the Benton Harbor overpass to get onto the west-bound entrance ramp of I-94.

Take Old 31/M-139 where you'll come to Scottsdale Corner. An Exit out of the hotel, turning left (north) onto Pipestone Road. Go
Amoco Station is there, along with a stop light. Ace Hardware is under the I-94 overpass. At the second traffic light, turn left onto
kitty-corner on the left. Continue straight, which is definitely now Mall Drive, which runs between McDonald's and Applebee's. At
M-139. To get to your hotel you'll want to get onto 1-94 for one the first stop sign, turn right. Even though you've turned right,
mile (shown as Exit 28 on your map). Take 1-94 east. Get off at you're still on Mall Drive. Continue and you'll see Lowe's on
