Media Results
Five-page story in Borsen, the Danish business daily, by Louise With, a New
York-based Danish reporter who visited Carmel in 2011 and has interviewed the
mayor on several occasions. The lead of the story:
Four years ago, neither the man nor his
sleepy suburb 20 minutes'drive from Indianapolis were
known outside the U.S. Midwest. But in
recent years, both James Brainard - called Jim - and
the city received growing attention in international
media such as CNN, BBC and The Economist, as the
mayor himself has become a sought-after speaker on
meetings and conferences on urban development.

Activities
Washington DC Media Appointments, Week of March 11
Scheduled the following appointments for the mayor during his planned trip to
Washington March 11-14. Unfortunately, illness forced the Mayor to postpone
his visit until a later time. But all the following indicated a willingness to meet with
him during a future visit to the Nation's Capital:

• Presentation at Smart Growth America: Mayor was to address
full staff meeting of the organization before lunch with a few of
its executives
• Susan Milligan, U.S. News and World Report
• Karen Thuermer, Freelance Writer (FDI among other
publications) Lunch at The National Press Club)
Pitched others, including Jon Swaine of The Telegraph for meetings, ones
that still can take place during a future visit.
Additional Activities
• Proposed Mayor Brainard for membership on the Local Leaders Council
for Smart Growth America (http://www.smartgrowthamerica.org/local-
leaders) and joined the Mayor and others in March 14 organizational call.
• Made final arrangements and helped writer Louise With obtain additional
photos for the Carmel story in the Danish business publication Borsen.
• Provided Natasha Loder, Midwest bureau chief of The Economist with
photos of Carmel for a presentation she was making about smart growth.
• Provided a rough English translation of the Borsen article.
• Shared with select site consultants and national media news of Geico
selecting Carmel for a 1200-job expansion.
April Work Plan
• Propose Mayor as a speaker/participant in the New York Times-
sponsored symposium in late April on sustainable growth
• Continue follow up on the proposed "debate" for The Economist between
the Mayor and an advocate/apologist for sprawl.
• Continue to follow up with the various Chicago, NYC and Washington DC
reporters/editors who conducted interviews over the last several months
for any relevant information they may require.

• Share relevant new Carmel publicity and Carmel developments — such as
recent corporate expansions and relocations, specifically the Geico
announcement -- and news hooks with a broad universe of:
• Site selection consultants (who advise major corporations on
expansion and relocation decisions);
• Regional media throughout the U.S.
• European and Asian media
• Share (with the Mayor and Nancy Heck) appropriate media leads that
come our way; follow up appropriately.
• Continue outreach for potential speaking engagements for the Mayor in
business and economic development forums.
• Make initial inquiries into promotional opportunities for Carmel with its
featured band in the Tournament of Roses Parade next January.
• Explore with Mayor rescheduling of the media appointments in
Washington.
