But increasingly, development teams have also recognized that if the site is not taken into account, a project only addresses a piece of the sustainability puzzle. Nationally respected leaders in landscape architecture, city government, business and arboriculture will share their insights, experiences and practical solutions in tackling sustainable site development. Trees- Earth's Sustainable Living Artwork offers presentations of real-world projects, as well as opportunities to network and exchange ideas with sustainability-minded architects, planners, landscape architects, contractors, property managers and parks professionals. Program Schedule 7:30 am Registration 8:30 am Root system problems solved: growing, planting, and managing trees for health and anchorage [ter. Edward F. Gliman, Professor, Environmental Horticultural Department University of Florida Root collar disorders cause serious health and stability issues for shade and ornamental trees in our landscapes. We will focus on preventing and solving these issues using research and clinical experience from across the nation. You will leave knowing what practices in the container and field nursery, at planting, and even years after planting can solve these problems.Your practices can change tomorrow using these simple strategies. 9:30 am Our challenging soil environment and tools for combat: Dr. Kelby Fits, Arboricultural Researcher Bartlett Tree Experts We will discuss physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil and how they limit plant performance. As plant managers, our soil management techniques can have a profound effect on above-ground results. The evolution of techniques such as pneumatic excavation has revolutionized our approach to improving soils. Even with these tools, ancient practices of amending soil with biochar are now being revisited as a "new"way to improve soil performance. This talk will provide an overview of these practices in urban horticulture. 10:30 am Refreshment Break 10:45 am Polishing a Gem: Restoring Oldfields' Historic Landscape Mark Zeionis, The Ruth Lilly Deputy Director of Environmental & Historic Preservation Indianapolis Museum of Art Restoring the lush landscape of the Oldfields Estate at the Indianapolis Museum of Art has been a decades-long process, earning it National Historic Landmark status. Mark Zelonis will detail through historic and contemporary images the process of bringing these gardens back to life and becoming the museum's largest collective work of a rt. 11:30 am Lunch &Networking 12:15 pm Garden Tours (choose from the following) IMA Rain Garden Tour Rain gardens are designed to improve water quality by mimicking natural cleansing processes in forests and meadows where rainfall is evaporated, taken up by plants,or drained into the soil within 24 to 48 hours. The garden traps sediment, fertilizers, and other non-point source pollutants(motor oil, metals, bacteria, etc.)found in storm water runoff, preventing them from being carried untreated into rivers and streams. Intensive Green Roof Tour It's easy to forget that beneath this multi layered planting is a 240 car underground parking garage. The plants grow in 4 feet of structured soil or soil-less soil,a mixture of hadite(expanded shale), course sand, and shredded pine bark. This mix is specially designed to drain rapidly and keep the weight of the water off the garage. The plants are able to capture much of the storm water runoff compared to impervious surfaces. We will talk about the plants used in this application and struggles with stabilizing the pH. 1:15 pm 9/11 Memorial Trees: Meeting the Challenge Wayne Dubin, Vice-President and Division Manager for Bartlett's New Jersey and New York offices Bartlett Tree Experts Since 2007, Bartlett Tree Experts has been providing virtually round-the-clock care to the 400+ Swamp White Oak that were hand selected for planting at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan. We will take you through the ups and downs as well as the ins and outs of caring for these enormously significant trees. 2:00 pm Refreshment Break 2:15 pm New Tools To Combat Tree Pests Dr. Cliff Sadof, Professor of Entomology Purdue University The discussion will cover how this year's weather and last year's drought can influence your pest management needs. Particular attention will be given to managing borers, mites and scales insects. Purdue's new Tree Doctor app will also be reviewed as a way to improve diagnosis and communication with clients. 3:00 pm Native Trees, Roots and Urban Landscapes _Tr ut. .F <r+••.$«+" ..;x:?z>„'t^ £r..r. sa. rrt ._w!Y.;f'"=.:;2'°'"_ .".'"" . }- AMM - i'.✓ `.r a _ fz` r --.+Sr 4 t}_r( - {...{,,, r, z_'A M{'l r;,''3 .ate . anar ahaw, Owner and Founder Possibility Place Nursery Since 1978,the nursery has specialized in growing native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants that are indigenous to the Chicago area.
