GENERAL NOTES
FOUNDATIONS
1. PREPARE AREAS OF THE SITE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE BY REMOVING TOPSOIL, EXISTING
FILL, ORGANIC MATERIAL, OR FROZEN, WET, SOFT, LOOSE OR OTHERWISE UNSUITABLE
MATERIALS REPLACE WITH WELL-GRADED GRANULAR FILL.
2. PROOFROLL THE EXPOSED SUBGRADE WITH A MEDIUM-WEIGHT ROLLER TO DETERMINE IF ANY
POCKETS OF SOFT, UNSUITABLE MATERIAL EXIST BENEATH THE EXPOSED SUBGRADE. REMOVE
ANY UNSUITABLE MATERIAL ENCOUNTERED AND REPLACE WITH A WELL COMPACTED
GRANULAR MATERIAL.
3. PROPER PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION OF ENGINEERED FILL IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE
GENERAL CONTRACTOR. PLACE FILL MATERIAL IN LAYERS NOT EXCEEDING 8 INCHES IN
LOOSE THICKNESS. MECHANICALLY COMPACT EACH LAYER.
4. FOOTINGS SHALL BEAR ON FIRM, UNDISTURBED MATERIAL. IF UNSUITABLE MATERIAL IS
ENCOUNTERED, REESTABLISH THE BEARING ELEVATION OF THE FOOTING BY LOCALIZED
UNDERCUTTING, AND FILLING WITH SUITABLE GRANULAR MATERIAL OR CONCRETE.
5. PLACE FOOTINGS THE SAME DAY EXCAVATIONS ARE OPENED. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE,
ADEQUATELY PROTECT THE EXPOSED MATERIAL IN THE BASES OF THE FOOTING
EXCAVATIONS FROM ANY DETRIMENTAL CHANGE IN CONDITION SUCH AS FROM
DISTURBANCE, RAIN OR FREEZING. SURFACE RUNOFF SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER
THE EXCAVATIONS. OVEREXCAVATE THE EXISTING
EXCAVATIONS TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF ONE FOOT BELOW THE FOUNDATION ELEVATION AND
BACKFILL WITH ENGINEERED FILL CONSISTING OF COARSE AGGREGATE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE
A MORE UNIFORM BEARING.
6. THE OWNER SHALL RETAIN A LICENSED TESTING AGENCY TO DETERMINE THE MINIMUM ALLOWABLE
NET BEARING PRESSURE AT THE COLUMN FOOTING LOCATIONS IS 2000 PSF. THE MINIMUM ALLOWABLE
NET BEARING PRESSURE BENEATH THE SLAB ON GRADE WILL BE 1000 PSF.
REINFORCING STEEL FOR CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE
1. PROVIDE MINIMUM CONCRETE COVER FOR REINFORCING STEEL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
ACI "BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE" (ACI 318-05), UNLESS
OTHERWISE INDICATED.
2. REINFORCING STEEL SHALL BE SUPPORTED AND SECURED AGAINST DISPLACEMENT IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONCRETE REINFORCING STEEL INSTITUTE'S "MANUAL OF
STANDARD PRACTICE".
3. DETAILS OF REINFORCING STEEL FABRICATION AND PLACEMENT SHALL CONFORM TO ACI
"DETAILS AND DETAILING OF CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT" (ACI 315) AND "MANUAL OF
ENGINEERING AND PLACING DRAWINGS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES" (ACI 315R)
UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.
4. REINFORCING STEEL BENDS, HOOKS AND LAP SPLICES SHALL CONFORM TO THE ACI "BUILDING
CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE" (ACI 318-05) UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.
5. PROVIDE STANDEES FOR THE SUPPORT OF TOP REINFORCEMENT FOR FOOTINGS AND MATS.
6. FIELD BENDING OF REINFORCING STEEL IS PROHIBITED.
CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE
1. THE MIXING, HANDLING, PLACING AND CURING OF CONCRETE SHALL BE
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ACI "BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR
REINFORCED CONCRETE" (ACI 318-05).
2. CURING OF SLABS: CURE SLABS WITH CURING COMPOUNDS OR MOISTURE
RETENTION COVERS.
