Today's Awnings
Today's awnings offer a variety of advan-
tages for the person who wants to make
the most significant impact of all-a
positive first impression. Awnings give a
home or business personality by using
traditional or bold colors that express
individuality and character. An endless
array of colors, shapes and styles allows
the awning craftsman complete design
flexibility. By combining functional
excellence with decorative. appeal, there
is an unlimited palate of design opportu-
nities that can accentuate any building.
The best in craftsmanship from local
awning manufacturers is showcased in
every design. It is important to contact
the awning fabricator or supplier early in
the process for assistance with design,
frame and fabric selection.
Residential Awnings
Residential awnings can extend a living
space with style. They can have a signifi-
cant impact on a home by extending a
temporary "roof' over a patio or deck.
Awnings can make rooms more comfort-
able by reducing the temperature and the
sun's glare without closing drapes or
blinds, Awnings can be traditional or
innovative; as such, they can transfonn a
home into an artistic masterpiece.
The flexibility of fabric awn' ngs can
echo the architecture of an i teresting
building or add new life to an I ordinary
facade. Awnings and canopid visually
enhance commercial and retidential
buildings by providing color tnd soft-
ness to a rougher foundation. The cost-
effective and energy-savin~ design
possibilities are almost endless, I

Awning Manufacturing
Most awnings are custom-manufactured
by craftsmen using outstanding fabrics
and designs to meet such specific objec-
tives as identity, image and protection
from the elements. Awnings can be illu-
minated, decorated and used as signage.
They can be stationary or retractable and

adorned with a variety of graphic
elements, The completed awning project
receives an overall inspection that takes
into consideration framework, fabric,
method of seaming, graphics, installation
and additional accessories.
Awning Styles
Depending upon the application, com-
mercial and residential awnings can
assume a variety of shapes and sizes.
The basic shapes of these fabric struc-
tures make design options limitless.

Energy
Stylish, yet practical, today's awnings
provide protection from harmful UV
rays and nature's uncontrollable elements.
Awnings that shade windows, decks and
patios create an environment that allows
people to enjoy outdoor activities while
avoiding excessive heat and sun exposure.
They also conserve energy, on average
cooling the interior of a home or business
8-15 degrees. The exact amount of heat
Retractable awnings resemble typical
traditional triangle structures, except
they are attached only at the top and
rarely have side panels. Retractables

reduction depends upon several factors,
including the exposure of the window,
the color of the fabric and the style and
method of awning attachment. For
example, awnings can reduce solar heat
gain by up to 65 percent on south-
facing windows, and 77 percent on
west-facing windows.
activated controls that allow them
to be folded or retracted. Sensor-con-
trolled awnings are installed
with wind, rain and sun sensors to
open and close the awning during
inclement weather.

A variety olf rethods are used to apply
graphics to tlhy awning.
Silkscreenitig
Graphics of almost any complexity can
be accurate~ytransferred to the awning
through thf \.lse of screens cut specifi-
cally for tlieapplication. Ink is spread
evenly ovejf ~he top of the screen and
"printed" ~nto the face of the fabric.
Silkscreenidgis an excellent method for
ensuring c9n~istent quality in multiple
applicationS,? \\11d can be an economical
way to aptl~ graphics where a large
quantity is iinvolved.
Painting
Handpaintiigis the most traditional and
often the rp~st economical method of
applying ~raphics. Handpainting the
graphics di~ecdy onto the awning, with
materials se~ested specifically for fabrics,
can proviqIe a customized effect to
any awmng;
When two-color effects are required,
many manufacturers recommend spray-
on air brushing methods, which can
achieve color blending or shading.
Typically, graphics are drawn onto the
awning and then blocked out with a
masking compound. The entire awning is
then spray painted in one or more colors,
while the awning is on the frame. This
method produces an even consistency of
paint application and a smooth finish.
Cut-Out Lettering
In applications where easy readability is
essential, cut-out lettering is an excellent
and economical method to apply simple
graphics to the awning. Letters and/or
graphics are actually cut out of the fabric
and replaced from behind with letters or
graphics cut from a second translucent
fabric.
Heat Color- Transfer
Awnings can be decorated through the
use of a heat color-transfer method,
Painting
which utilizes a vacuum appl' cator to
adhere color to the fabric. Any umber of
colors can be applied simultan ously, as
pigments and resins are embe ded into
the fabric. Colors are actually b ed into
the fabric, creating bold color se aration.
Pressure-Sensitive Graphics
Simple to moderately comple
can be applied with great ccuracy
through the use of pressure-sens' tive vinyl
films. The films are cut by hard or by
computer to a desired design ~nd then
placed in the proper register on te fabric.
Eradicating
Eradicating is usually used for . uminated
awnings. It involves eliminat' ng, with
special chemicals, an existing co r from a
white vinyl fabric that has been recoated
at the factory with eradicable i s.

IDuminated Awnings and
Canopies
Illuminated or backlit awnings can add a
new dimension of drama and excitement
to a variety of commercial establishments.
The backlit application blends the softness
and flexibility of the awning with the
high visibility of a sign. They provide
identification for restaurants, shopping
centers, theaters and other businesses that
desire broad visibility.
The construction techniques and materi-
als utilized differ in several respects from
the standard application. In order to
maximize light reflection, only translu-
cent fabrics such as vinyl-coated and lami-
nated polyesters are used. Designed
specifically for illuminated application,
these fabrics can be easily cleaned, deco-
rated and heat sealed.
While accommodating lighting hardware,
special framework systems are developed
to minimize shadowing. Attention also is
given to the construction of the fabric
cover so that seams fall on the crossbars
and do not detract from the overall
appearance of the awning. Graphics can
be applied by any of the earlier described
application methods.
Proper lighting is the key to the success of
any application, Depending on the type
of fixture and the placement and power
of the lighting, effects can range from
subtle to striking. Local manufacturers
work closely with lighting consultants and
suppliers in the selection of fluorescent,
mercury vapor or other types of lighting
hardware. The result is a stunning and
versatile awning that reflects the best in
craftsmanship and technology.

General Frame Behavior
Current frame construction practices
favor the use of either slip-fittings or
direct tube-to-tube welding. In the case
of fittings, the overall behavior of the
framework is less rigid than if the frame-
work were welded together. An awning
system connected by the use of fittings
will behave similar to two simple beams
(in other words, the ends of the beams
are not restrained from rotation at the
ends). A fully-welded frame will behave
structurally similar to a continuous beam
over the same supports. It should be
noted that the latter case can produce
less deflection and smaller bending
stresses in the structure, which may
result in greater efficiency.
Awning F~ijric Characteristics
There are 1ight primary fabrics used In awnings: painted
poly / cotto*, jvinyl-coated poly/cotton, vinyl-laminated
polyester, s!olution-dyed acrylic, vinyl-coated polyester,
acrylic-coate~ polyester, vinyl-coated polyester cotton blends and
solution-dye~ t):lodacrylic.
These fabrics have been rigorously tested in labora-
tory and field situations for such performance characteristics as
weathering, durability and flame-retardancy. The fabric used in
illuminated awnings and canopies will differ slightly i weight
and translucency. The Awning Division of IFAI has published
an Awning and Canopy Fabric Specifier's Guide hat list
fabrics manufactured and distributed by member comp nies. To
obtain this publication, call the Awning Division of IF AI

Awning Frames
Frame systems are recommended by the
manufacturer, according to personal prefer-
ence and regional "norms," Frames are
joined by special fittings or welding, accord-
ing to manufacturer recommendations and
regional variations. A critical part of awning
framework design is anchoring supports,
such as building or wall support. Local
codes, climatic conditions, wind and snow
load requirements and local design customs
all affect the construction of awning iiame-
work systems.

The size of the tTamework material and the
amount of metal used is detennined by the
overall configuration of the awning. As the
awning's surtLce area increases, the size and
strength of the fuunework system. also must
increase. Staple on systems utilize slotted
aluminum extrusions for ii-ame members
where the fabric is stapled into the slot and
is covered with a weather strip that also acts
as a trim piece. In many cases, the overall
look the designer is striving to achieve will
affect the fi-anle construction.
