Inspect BMPs prior to forecast rain, daily during extended rain events, after rain events, weekly during the rainy season, and at two -week intervals during the non -rainy season. 2. Filter Fabric Fences. If the fabric becomes clogged, torn, or degrades, it should be replaced. Make sure the stakes are securely driven in the ground and are in good shape (i.e., not bent, cracked, or splintered, and are reasonably perpendicular to the ground). Replace damaged stakes. 3. Gravel Filters. If the gravel becomes clogged with sediment, it must be carefully removed from the inlet and either cleaned or replaced. Since cleaning gravel at a construction site may be difficult, consider using the sediment -laden stone as fill material and put fresh stone around the inlet. Inspect bags for holes, gashes, and snags, and replace bags as needed. Check gravel bags for proper arrangement and displacement. 4. Sediment that accumulates in the BMP must be periodically removed in order to maintain BMP effectiveness. Sediment should be removed when the sediment accumulation reaches one -third of the barrier height. Sediment removed during maintenance may be incorporated into earthwork on the site ore disposed at an appropriate location. 5. Remove storm drain inlet protection once the drainage area is stabilized. 6. MAINTAINING TEMPORARY CONCRETE WASH OUT FACILITIES SHOULD INCLUDE REMOVING AND DISPOSING OF HARDENED CONCRETE AND RETURNING THE FACILITY TO A FUNCTIONAL CONDITION. PLAN FOR THE FENCE TO BE AT LEAST 10 ft. FROM THE TOE OF THE SLOPE TO PROVIDE A SEDIMENT STORAGE AREA. 2. PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE AREA IF SEDIMENT CLEANOUT WILL BE NEEDED. FENCE CONSTRUCTION 1. ALONG THE ENTIRE INTENDED FENCE UNE, DIG AN 8 in. DEEP FLAT - BOTTOMED OR V- SHAPED TRENCH. 2. ON THE DOWNSIDE SLOPE OF THE TRENCH, DRIVE THE WOOD OR STEEL SUPPORT POSTS AT LEAST 1 ft. INTO THE GROUND, SPACING THEM NO MORE THAN 8 ft. APART IF THE FENCE IS SUPPORTED BY WIRE OR 6 ft. IF EXTRA - STRENGTH FABRIC IS USED WITHOUT SUPPORT WIRE. ADJUST SPACING, IF NECESSARY, TO ENSURE THAT POSTS ARE SET AT THE LOW POINTS ALONF THE FENCE UNE. BACKFILL THE TRENCH WITH COMPACTED EARTH OR GRAVEL. NOTE: IF USING A PRE - PACKED COMMERCIAL SILT FENCE RATHER THAN CONSTRUCTING ONE, FOLLOW MANUFACTURER'S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. SILT FENCE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. INSPECT THE SILT FENCE PERIODICALLY AND AFTER EACH STORM EVENT. 2. IF FABRIC TEARS, STARTS TO DECOMPOSE, OR IN ANY WAY BECOMES INEFFECTIVE, REPLACE THE AFFECTED PORTION IMMEDIATELY. 3. REMOVE DEPOSITED SEDIMENT WHEN IT REACHES HALF THE HEIGHT OF THE FENCE AT ITS LOWEST POINT OR IS CAUSING THE FABRIC TO BULGE. 4. TAKE CARE TO AVOID UNDERMINING THE FENCE DURING CLEAN OUT. 5. AFTER THE CONTRIBUTING DRAINAGE AREA HAS BEEN STABILIZED REMOVE THE FENCE AND SEDIMENT DEPOSITS, BRING THE DISTURBED AREA TO GRADE, AND STABILIZE. OUTLET CONSTRUCTION (OPTIONAL) 1. DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE LOCATION FOR A REINFORCED, STABILIZED BYPASS FLOW OUTLET (UNLESS THE FENCE IS DESIGNED TO RETAIN ALL RUNOFF FROM A 2 YEAR FREQUENCY, 24 HR DURATION STORM EVENT) 2. SET THE OUTLET ELEVATION SO THAT WATER DEPTH CANNOT EXCEED 1 ft. AT THE LOWEST POINT ALONG THE FENCE UNE. 3. LOCATE THE OUTLET WEIR SUPPORT POSTS NO MORE THAN 4 ft.
