DRAINAGE REPORT
CARMEL OmCE PARK PHASE m
AT
GRADLE DRIVE & 3RO STREET
CARMEL, IN
PROJECT NARRA riVE
This project is located in the southwest quadrant of the intersection of Gradle Drive and 3 rd
Street in Carmel, Indiana. The construction will consist of two (2) office/warehouse buildings
with parking and driveways. The drainage calculations and detention sizing include future
development of a 10,000 sq.ft. building and a 6,189 sq.ft. parking area. The existing
topography site is primarily a large grassy hill with the peak being just to the south of the south
boundary line. It is bound by Gracile Drive to the north, 3 rd Street to the east, an office park to
the west, and said peak to the south. The watershed is 3.52 acres and somewhat pie-shaped
as shown in Exhibit 'A' with a small portion of the site contributing to a detention system in the
office park to the west and a small portion of the site contributing to an existing 15 inch pipe
culvert at the southeast corner of the site. The majority of the watershed drains north and is
collected by a road-side ditch along Gradle Drive. The ditch flows from west to east with a 12
inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) contributing from the west and a 15 inch CMP outletting the
ditch at the northeast corner of the site.
EXISTING DRAINAGE CONDITIONS
The existing 15 inch CMP which outlets the site appears to have been damaged from utility
work done in the surrounding area. The inlet and outlet elevations are in reverse with the outlet
elevation being 827.7 feet and the inlet elevation being 827.6. The existing ditch into which the
damaged pipe outlets flows north at a grade of about 0.2%. The existing ditch along the north
side of the site is acting as a detention area due to the damaged pipe and shallow grade of the
outflowing ditch. The existing 10 year storm discharge was calculated to be 4.68 cfs, however,
this is not a true discharge due to the exiting problems indicated.
PROPOSED DRAINAGE CONFIGURA TION
The damaged 15 inch CMP needs to be replaced. By replacing the 15 inch CMP with a 15
inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) at slope of 0.2% while holding the outlet elevation of
827.7, the proposed pipe will create positive drainage from the exiting site without having any
adverse affects downstream. Since the capacity of the proposed 15 inch RCP is 3.14 cfs and
the 10 year storm discharge is 3.70 efs, the smaller discharge was used to calculate the
detention area required.
PROPOSED DETENTION AREA
The existing ditch was expanded at the northeast corner of the site to create an area of
detention as shown on the plans. In lieu of calculating the time of concentration and discharge
of the' offsite watershed which contributes to the project site, the maximum amount of
discharge from the existing 12 inch CMP was calculated as 0.86 cfs and added to the
developed 100 year storm water runoff. The detention needed for the developed site was
calculated to be 0.36 acre/feet. Using an elevation of the 830.20 feet the capacity of the
proposed detention area is 0.38 acrelfeet.
