I received your contact information from Joe Faucett. I first noticed the water on Saturday morning December 14. Fortunately for us, it was mostly confined to an area that had a cement floor near the furnace and the hot water heater. Just a very small amount went into the first couple of feet of the carpet adjoining the furnace room. At this point, it does not appear that any restoration services will be needed. However, we have been in this house for 16 years and have never had water in the basement. So, first thing Monday morning, we scheduled an apt for that day with Bedell Plumbing. The intent was to get a diagnosis as to what caused the problem. As you can imagine after a thorough inspection of our systems, they could find nothing wrong. The cost for the service call was $105. The purpose of my letter is to ask you to consider reimbursing us for this plumbing service call. Attached is a copy of the receipt that we received from Bedell Plumbing. The service tail/diagnosis was $105 and then while I had the technician in the home, he did a quick fix on the handle of one of our toilets..thus,the $125 total charge. If you have any questions regarding that, I'm sure that Bedell can confirm. Tom was the technician that came to our house. Thank you for your consideration. Although it is not a major amount, it is a cost that we should not have had to bear. Luckily the water was mostly confined to the rooms that had concrete floors and only a very minor portion of the rooms with carpet got a bit damp. I did have one question though for you. We didn't know what the situation was and therefore, had a plumbing company come out right away on Monday to try and find the problem as we had never had water in our basement in the 16 years that we have lived at this home.They spent a good 45 minutes giving the home a good analysis and diagnosis as to why we took on water and naturally, couldn't find anything. I did end up having to pay$105 for their visit. Is there any way that I can get reimbursed for this plumbing house call? The City responded quickly and has been working on the drains and will continue to work on them for the next several days. We don't anticipate major hindrances to the neighborhood roads and the City says there shouldn't be any further backups as the flow lines have all been cleared. In addition to fixing this current issue, the City will also be checking every manhole and drain cover in Kingswood over the next weeks (weather permitting) to prevent this event from happening again. Some important things to note: If your basement took on water: Please email Joe Faucett of Carmel at ifaucett@carmel.in.gov with details of the situation. (You can also call him at 317-571-2634 ext 1636) He will coordinate communications between your insurance agency and Carmel's insurance agency in regards to recouping restoration costs. If you smell sewer gasses: First pour water in ALL drains in your house. (sinks, tubs, floor drains, etc) The pipe cleaning the city is doing this week can create a vacuum, drawing water out of the traps in your drains thus permitting gaseous vapors into your house. If, after you've filled all your drain traps and waited a few hours, you still smell sewer odors please contact Joe Faucett of Carmel at ifaucett@carmel.in.gov with details of the situation. (You can also call him at 317-571-2634 ext 1636) I'm happy to say the City of Carmel has been wonderful these past few days. The collapse in our pipes is extremely rare and couldn't have been expected.
